The Importance of Base Coat & Topcoat When Applying Nail Polish

Your nail has natural oils that prevent nail polish from adhering well. The best way to make sure your manicure will last longer is by applying basecoat before nail color and topcoat over it.

In her article “Do You Really Need to Use Base Coat?”  Kara K. Murphy compares the base coat with the foundation of a house “Just like when you build a house, you need to start with a good foundation — and a base coat is the basis for a long-lasting manicure.” using the  basecoat properly will help provide a professional looking manicure.

Dr. Heidi Waldorf, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City says that basecoats:

-“stick to the nail below and the polish above to prolong the manicure, and allow for enough flexibility to move with the nail as it bends so it won’t chip off easily.”

-“provides a clear protective layer between the nail and the pigment of the polish above.”Basecoat

When using Piggy Paint or SOPHi nail polish, we recommend using the Basecoat + Sealer (Piggy Paint) or PRIME + SHINE + SEAL System (SOPHi). This revolutionary formula provides best wear for our water-based polish giving it the durability of traditional nail polish.

A topcoat acts like a barrier to protect from peeling and chipping, giving you a long lasting manicure. Piggy Paint Shine Topcoat also adds scratch resistance and shine.

With Piggy Paint, for maximum durability you can also use Basecoat + Sealer over the top of Topcoat to lock in the color.

Resist the urge to use your topcoat as a base coat and vice versa. “Generally, a base coat doesn’t have the shine of a topcoat, and a topcoat doesn’t have the ‘sticky’ surface that’s important in a base coat,” says Dr. Waldorf. So switching between the two isn’t a good idea.

Since Piggy Paint/SOPHi is water-based and does not contain harsh chemicals, it takes longer for its ultimate hardness to be reached. That’s why we highly recommend blow drying your nails, the blow dryer also speeds up the application process.

Video Shoot Behind the Scenes

Posted by on Jun 10, 2015 in News | 0 comments

At The Pig we know how to have fun, but the day we shot the SOPHi Application video with Adair Creative definitely tops the fun chart! See our behind the scenes images at what it takes to shoot a 1 minute video. Also, we are excited to announce that we will soon be launching a dedicated website for SOPHi! The response to this new line has been amazing! We really appreciate everyone who has trusted us and tried it out. Thank you for allowing us to bring you a safer alternative to nail polish that is natural and SOPHisticated without the harsh, smelly chemicals! If you haven’t tried SOPHi yet, you can get it here. Follow us on Instagram @SOPHi_Nail_Polish for more!

Melanie and I the morning of the shoot getting manicures. I was the designated nail painter for the video but she got hers done too just in case! I like to think of it as I was the starter and she was second string! Those who know how good I am at sports understand I’ve never been the starter before. 🙂

When we arrived to Adair’s studio they had all of the lighting setup. Dominique, our amazing model, met us there. Here we are posing so they can get the best camera angle.

Bottom left picture shows Derrick setting up the product shot. The angle of this shot was great because it showed Dominique and I painting nails in the background. Very cool. If you want to know a secret about the final cut of the video, Melanie actually photo/ video bombed it. Watch closely, about 8 seconds into the video, (posted at the bottom of this page) and you can see her walk across the screen behind the product shot and in front of us painting nails. That part makes me laugh every time!

Bottom left shows another image of that product shot from the camera’s angle. You can see us in the background. David and Derrick made sure the clip looked good and then we moved on to the next scene. This is the part where Mel jumped in with the clapperboard and set the next scene. In real life they don’t actually say “scene 2 take 1”, disappointing I know.  Check her out below and see how she did.

Here Zach is working on the product shot while Mel takes a selfie.

This was a great team to work with and we are super happy with how the video turned out!

That’s a wrap! Check it out! Don’t forget to look for Mel’s video bomb at 8 seconds.
